A brilliant Nerello Mascalese grown on a completely rocky vineyard, specifically volcanic pumice, and sits at 600-700m asl in the region of Randazzo. This pumice attracts heat during the day and then emits it to the roots overnight. The steepest, hardest, rockiest vineyard and vines are between 50 and 100 years old. Only 3 vineyards on the northern side of the volcano have pure ancient volcanic soils, Bocca D’Orzo, San Lorenzo and Calderara Sottana. Though young by geological standards, this is the oldest type of soil where it is possible to plant in the entire appellation.

The Grape

Nerello Mascalese

A rare but much loved red grape variety grown on the volcanic soils of Mount Etna in Sicily. It's kind of like a cross between a Pinot Noir and a Nebbiolo...heavenly...and makes wines that are deliciously light-bodied but intensely flavoured with zingy red fruits, crunchy cherry, spicy cinnamon, dried herbals, zesty acidity, leather and a complex volcanic earthiness that sits underneath it all. A brilliant variety that is growing in popularity by the day!
