The 760 Metri Etna Rosso is the lowest-altitude wine made from Sciara, but still is incredibly high in comparison to other producers of Nerello Mascalese. This is a blend of 90% Nerello Mascalese and 10% Cappuccio, from vines ranging 15 to 75+ years old, planted in pure volcanic rock and sand and trained on both goblet and double cordon. The wine then rests for 19 months across French oak barrels of different sizes and glass containers.

About the wine

Tasting notes

Dark florals, herbals and anise with lively and racy sour cherries, stones and a hint of smoke. Medium-bodied with fine tannins and crisp acidity, with a core of juicy red currants and a stony influence. Tactile and textured, with a delicious savoury finish and impressive length.

Expert review

Youthful mid ruby. Beautiful lifted, perfumed nose with wild strawberry, cranberry and cherry and with touches of exotic spice. Really bursting with personality and with a clear saline undertow. Salty, savoury and yet perfumed fruit palate with finely ground, persistent tannins. Firm and yet finely structured and something that can age; and certainly I would wait for another year.

The Grape

Nerello Mascalese

A rare but much loved red grape variety grown on the volcanic soils of Mount Etna in Sicily. It's kind of like a cross between a Pinot Noir and a Nebbiolo...heavenly...and makes wines that are deliciously light-bodied but intensely flavoured with zingy red fruits, crunchy cherry, spicy cinnamon, dried herbals, zesty acidity, leather and a complex volcanic earthiness that sits underneath it all. A brilliant variety that is growing in popularity by the day!
