The 980 Metri is labelled Terre Siciliane Rosso because the vineyards are over 1,000 metres altitude, beyond which a Mount Etna red wine can no longer carry the Etna Rosso designation. 100% Nerello Mascalese from old vines (50 to 80+ years old), trained on both goblet and double cordon, sitting on the purest volcanic soils scattered with black ash, rock and sand.

About the wine

Tasting notes

Aromas of blood red rose, orange, sweet tarragon, Rooibos tea, dark red and black fruits and lovely anise-led spice, with a stony and textural palate that’s intensely focused and concentrated, yet dry and wonderfully fine with deep set mineral complexity, great freshness and sustained fine-grained tannins that wrap up all the wonderful fruit and sous-bois beautifully.

The Grape

Nerello Mascalese

A rare but much loved red grape variety grown on the volcanic soils of Mount Etna in Sicily. It's kind of like a cross between a Pinot Noir and a Nebbiolo...heavenly...and makes wines that are deliciously light-bodied but intensely flavoured with zingy red fruits, crunchy cherry, spicy cinnamon, dried herbals, zesty acidity, leather and a complex volcanic earthiness that sits underneath it all. A brilliant variety that is growing in popularity by the day!
