One of Burgundy's most singular, least known but superb white wines, the Clos de l'Arlot Blanc is a Chardonnay Premier Cru monopole from a site that demands everything be done by hand, given the rugged and rocky slopes in this part of the Clos are too steep for machinery. Fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged 12 months in French oak (20% new) before three months in vat, the 2023 is a rich and layered white-Burgundy and, as the notes below make clear, it is seriously good. Those who know, know!

Complex mineral and flint aromas are supported by layers of white flowers, lemon pith, orange blossoms and profound chalkiness. The palate is medium-bodied with energetic acidity and a vivid mouthfeel, giving a chewy sensation, a mouthwatering finish and a steely, granitic aftertaste. Excellent energy and complexity from a site that also produces refined reds. Delicious

One of the most planted, versatile and popular white varieties in the world. As a stand alone grape, Chardonnay is not the most interesting, nor complex varietal out there...but in the hands of a great winemaker it can be turned into one of the world's greatest pleasures! From the best bubbles of Champagne, to the lean, unoaked and mineral expressions of Chablis and the opulent, oaked and complex whites of Burgundy, Chardonnay is responsible for making some of the greatest expressions of white wine on the planet.
