In 2021 I was fortunate enough to be given a chance to make wine from one of these old survivor vineyards planted in 1926. Situated nearby historic hamlet of Light Pass, on a small patch of distinct ‘terra rossa’ soil, these days in custody of Roger Maywald. Needless to say, I felt the pressure to do this precious block of land justice and create a wine that possesses all the eclectic characteristics of the old site, as well as adding that small bit of ‘here and now’, finished off with a smidgen of my own personal fingerprint, of course.

About the wine

Tasting notes

Deep, dark red in colour with un-matching varietal perfume, earthy aromas, hints of leather, tobacco, sage, cured meats, and sanguine. Season-derived fresh vibrancy welcomes the palate and further leads onto a broad sensorial journey supported by firm tannin structure, finishing with just the right amount of richness and mouthwatering aftertaste. An extravagant wine that will confidently last two decades or even more with proper cellaring. Decanting 1 hour before is recommended.

Expert review

Dark inky red with a purple hue and deliciously familiar, but very elegant nose of leathery black fruits, chocolate and dried blueberries, biltong, gentle savoury herbals, sweet spice, a touch of tobacco and a deeply set iron-like earthiness. In the mouth it floods the palate with rich, creamy and nectar-like flavours of inky dark fruits, licorice, beetroot and plum that are held within a beautifully shaped physique structured with firm ceramic tannins and seamlessly woven acidity. It’s big, it’s bold and intense, but immaculately balanced and boasts an elegance and vibrancy rarely seen in Barossan shiraz. It moves as one, steadily and with inertia, through to a tail that lasts minutes and echoes pure fruit. This is a remarkable celebration of Barossa Shiraz that offers so much more than you’d ever think. Absolutely stunning!

Wine Worth Writing About

The Grape

Shiraz or Syrah

Shiraz, or Syrah, is one of the most loved, rich and powerful red wine varieties made famous for its mineral and structured expressions from the Rhône in France and the rich and decadent fruity expressions from the Barossa Valley in Australia. Full bodied, rich in antioxidants and generously fruity, Shiraz sits proudly on the table for those that like their wine big and bold. Think violets, blackberries, plum, chocolate, pepper, black olive, liquorice, rosemary, tobacco and spice...i'm thirsty already!
