A short drive out of Eden Valley township towards Keyneton, midway up the hill at around 400m above sea level, amidst ironstone rocks and granite monoliths of various sizes, lies this idyllic, east facing block planted in 1998 by Mick Hearnden(H). When tasting that fruit for the first time it was clear to me that I’m about to get my hands on grapes that will perfectly complement the flavour profile of Ciccocioppo (C) grapes, which have proven in year 2020 to be of great quality. They both share this rugged environment, a shallow loamy soil that varies from gravely to rocky in parts, providing exciting mineral foundations on which aromatics, flavour, and structure of the end wine is built upon.

Intensely aromatic, with typical Eden Valley uplifted scents of dark cherries, currant, violets, and crushed rocks. There is a touch of ‘bouquet garni’- like fragrance enhancing the whole experience on the nose. Dark, ruby red colour, with vibrant hue at the rim suggesting freshness which is undeniably aligned with the characteristics of the season. Bright acidity tends to convince this is a wine that will go the distance easily, with firm tannin structure, depth, and complexity reassuring this. A complex wine that will keep developing its attributes over the years. Decanting recommended.

Deep purple and pink with a complex and deeply set nose of violets, roasted beetroot, cherries, blackberries and black mulberry, red peppercorns, burnt vanilla, mocha, roasted fig leaf, charred venison and a touch of Aussie bush underbrush, all of which sit upon a foundation of crushed gravel and stone. In the mouth it’s finely structured and bursts with deep, yet vibrant flavours that echo the nose, charged by beautifully matched acidity and textured dry with stony, almost granite-like tannins. Intensity and finesse. It flows like a river, twisting and pivoting like water over stones through to a long and elegant finish that leaves you wanting to explore it over and over again. This is very much a Rhone inspired Syrah and takes Eden Valley Shiraz to new, exciting and wonderfully textured heights! Exceptional.
Shiraz, or Syrah, is one of the most loved, rich and powerful red wine varieties made famous for its mineral and structured expressions from the Rhône in France and the rich and decadent fruity expressions from the Barossa Valley in Australia. Full bodied, rich in antioxidants and generously fruity, Shiraz sits proudly on the table for those that like their wine big and bold. Think violets, blackberries, plum, chocolate, pepper, black olive, liquorice, rosemary, tobacco and spice...i'm thirsty already!
