Power duo Doug Neal of Altera Terra/Paradise IV and Darrin Gaffy of Principia Wines make wines of depth, sophistication and refinement. A stellar year for chardonnay, with depth, latent power and vibrant acidity combining to produce a rich but finely boned chardonnay that will age for a considerable time. Once again made in very small quantities.

Words from the Winemaker(s): “For this vintage we wanted to focus on purity of fruit. The fruit and acidity has a tight focus and it’s in the white stonefruit spectrum with a lovely delicate nature to it. For this reason we used oak in a very gentle manner to merely augment length on the palate without compromising the fine nature of the fruit. This will be long lived.”

Pale gold with a silver shine and a nose of honey blossom, floral and sweet lime, fennel, grilled lemon, white stonefruit, fresh apricot, apple gums, almond nougat, cashew butter, white pepper, oats and dried galangal. A deep brine/mineral element sleeps in the background and will no doubt reveal more of itself in time. In the mouth it’s elegant, tightly toned and tense with a finely tuned intensity of flavour and plenty of mineral drive. Pristine flavours of apricot, white nectarine, tart pome and zesty citrus show creamy in texture, charged with chewy granny smith-like acidity and kissed with high toned spice. A seam of gently saline minerality travels hand-in-hand with the fruit, as does delicate tannins, and it reaches long ending with a lift of florals, juicy lime, whispers of white pineapple and a hint of fresh ginger. Another brilliant Merricks North release from Darrin and Doug
One of the most planted, versatile and popular white varieties in the world. As a stand alone grape, Chardonnay is not the most interesting, nor complex varietal out there...but in the hands of a great winemaker it can be turned into one of the world's greatest pleasures! From the best bubbles of Champagne, to the lean, unoaked and mineral expressions of Chablis and the opulent, oaked and complex whites of Burgundy, Chardonnay is responsible for making some of the greatest expressions of white wine on the planet.
