The Block 5 vineyard is about half of one hectare in size on a sheltered, north facing, and very quartz riddled site. It is a wonderful natural vineyard exposition. The wine is always darker in fruit expression and immediately more spicy and earthy that the Original Vineyard, but less immediately perfumed and has more tannin and fruit power. The wines from this vineyard require bottle ageing to develop the suppleness and delicacy as the Original Vineyard, but even in their youth these wines are more profound. This is arguably be the best Block 5 yet!

About the wine

Tasting notes

Beautifully modulated with perfect fruit flavours, a richness yet not weighty, layers of spice, cedary oak, complexity and detail. The tannins are the thing – textural, raw silk-like and pure. This is stunning.

Expert review

A maroon colour, there are again notes of truffles, dark berries and warm earth. There are spicy touches, dried herbs and undergrowth hints. This is ‘take me now, Lord’ stuff. Firm yet still ever-so-fine tannins, the finish is seemingly never-ending. Good complexity throughout. The palate shows more spices and brambles with the intensity never wavering. A thrilling Pinot.
