2019 Daniel Landi Las Iruelas Garnacha

SpainRedInternationalNew ArrivalsPrivate Cellar

$ 205.00 AUD

1

One of the most sought after Garnacha (Grenache) from famed producer Daniel Landi (Commando G) that you simply won't find anywhere else. This comes from five vineyards that range from 40 to 65 years of age, planted at around 750 meters in altitude on sandy granite soils with lots of silt. The whole clusters are fermented separately with indigenous yeasts—one-third with a soft and long maceration (for backbone and length), one-third with a short maceration (for fragrance) and one-third with only half of the skins (or double the juice) for juiciness—and the wines the matured for 10 months in oak vats varying in size from 1,500 to 4,000 liters.

About the wine

Tasting notes

Rustic, earthy and complex with terroir at its core. Think red berries, savoury herbals, iron and dried fig with gentle oxidative notes and deep minerality, this sits somewhere between Spain and Southern Rhone in feel and may confuse some in blind tastings to steer towards aged Rayas.

Expert review

"...there is a high-pitched herbal note here that I'd associate with cooler years; the wine is stony and austere, with a notable absence of heat. This is remarkably fresh and balanced. A triumph over the conditions of the year. - 97/100"

The Grape

Grenache

Grenache, (or Garnacha), is one of the most important red grape varieties in the world and is responsible for some of the most expensive and collected wines out there. It's the key variety for making elegant Châteauneuf-du-Pape and rich GSM's, but is brilliant as a stand alone variety and makes wines with a medium body, but intense and often spicy flavours of deep red fruits, black cherry, charred plum, leather, blood orange, dried herbals and cinnamon. From crisp and crunchy, to velvety and rich, this versatile grape is awesome!
