About the wine

Tasting notes

A brilliant wine of energy, tension and cut, the 2021 is immediately captivating. Crushed rocks, iron, slate, white pepper and mint all race across the palate. The persistent, intensely saline finish is a thing of beauty. The Valferana is a Gattinara for readers who enjoy reds built on energy and tension. This is so expressive, even in the early going

Expert review

Light ruby and brick red with a nose of dried rose, deep red fruits, cascara, kirsch, Chinotto, porcini, sumac, walnut, blood orange zest, mint tea and iron-infused gravel. In the mouth it’s firmly structured and tightly coiled with deep fruits held within a fortress of firm drying tannins, abundant acidity and complex rocky minerality that have heaps of tension and pent up energy. Overtones of cherry, rose water, raspberry and top shelf tea manages to escape its clutches and gives you glimmers of what’s to be. Insane potential here!

Wine Worth Writing About

The Grape

Nebbiolo

Often referred to as the king of red grapes, Nebbiolo is responsible for some of the greatest wines in the world. The regions of Barbaresco and Barolo, in Piedmont, Italy, create the most revered expressions of the variety and have set the benchmarks for the world over. Nebbiolo is quite light in colour, dry and delicate but packs a punch in aroma and flavour with notes of rose, tar, cherry, red berries, blood orange, licorice, leather, terracotta and earthy herbals. These wines have high acidity and high tannins, making them extremely age worthy that deepen in complexity over decades. Simply stunning wines!
