The name JDR is a tribute to the original owner of the Hemera Estate winery; Joseph Darius Ross. The best Shiraz of the year is selected to carry his name. Each vintage, the best sections of the Hemera Estate Shiraz vineyards and a selected grower’s Barossa Valley Shiraz are identified to have the power and intensity of flavours and tannins to be worthy of the “JDR” label. Careful vineyard management and bunch selection ensure only pristine fruit makes the grade.Once the grapes have been identified to be of optimum maturation and flavour ripeness, the parcels are brought into the winery where they are gently destemmed and gently crushed into open-topped fermenters. Here they are manually pumped-over twice daily to provide soft tannin extraction. Near the conclusion of the primary fermentation the wine is drained and then the skins transferred to the air-bag press. The free-run and pressed wine are combined before being transferred into a combination of predominately new French and American oak barrels for 20 months of maturation. Meticulous barrel selection takes place before the wine is blended.

About the wine

Tasting notes

This wine is crafted to provide complexity, structure and character, whilst still retaining the elegance for which Hemera Estate wines are renowned. The nose shows spiced, toasty oak merging with the darkly coiled flavours of black plum, blueberry and liquorice. Fine-grained oak tannins provide framework to the lush but poised and driven palate. The fine fruit tannins are rich and silky and compliment the brown spice and black forest gateau flavours on the palate. The finish is incredibly long, and graced with creamy notes of dark fruit and crumble. This is a wine that has the power and intensity to age with great style for 15+ years.

Shiraz or Syrah

Shiraz, or Syrah, is one of the most loved, rich and powerful red wine varieties made famous for its mineral and structured expressions from the Rhône in France and the rich and decadent fruity expressions from the Barossa Valley in Australia. Full bodied, rich in antioxidants and generously fruity, Shiraz sits proudly on the table for those that like their wine big and bold. Think violets, blackberries, plum, chocolate, pepper, black olive, liquorice, rosemary, tobacco and spice...i'm thirsty already!
